There’s a quiet elegance in this piece; a moment of pause held in soft light and layered color.
Quiet Plumage was created as part of an advanced study, inspired by Florida’s coastal wildlife and the calm, grounded presence of the flamingo. I was drawn to its natural curve and softness; something both strong and gentle at the same time.
Layered oils and subtractive techniques reveal both light and depth. Portions of the darker underlayer remain visible, allowing the form to emerge through contrast rather than heavy refinement. It creates a feeling of atmosphere, as if the flamingo is slowly stepping forward from shadow into light.
While rooted in a classical approach, the painting opens up through expressive choices—unblended brush strokes, shifting color, and letting some areas stay loose and unresolved. Those moments are what bring it to life.
This piece is about stillness… the kind that feels full, not empty.
